Saturday February 20th, 16 of Alaska's best snowboarders gather for the first
annual Alaskan local snowboarding championships on Thompson pass, Valdez Alaska.
The day started with "King of the Kicker", an Alaskan style big air contest. A 30-foot wide super jump provided several hundred spectators with a front row seat to HUGE air, flips, and spins from 16 of Alaska's best. Judging was done by the competitors choosing the 3 riders who preformed the best. Tony Mann stepped up, styling 360's and sticking them for the crown.
Next the "Thompson pass boarder X", a Chinese downhill, blew minds as 2 women and 13 men charged down the long, steeply winding, rolling course set on the Thompson pass roadshot all at once. A very intense race and incredibly challenging course, with Dan Coffey full throttle and broken brakes to the finish line for the money, very fast.
The volunteers did a GREAT job of pulling this event off in its first year; also we had no major injuries and no complications. Thank you to our sponsors Pepsi, Beaver sports, Totem Inn, VCVB, Alyeska and AK Bommer snowboards. Also thanks to the newspapers, college, radio and word of mouth for bringing in the spectators and competitors. We look fonvard to next year February 19th and 20th, 2000, to expand and add an event the "Alaskan slope style".
