Traveler's Guide to Sitka, Alaska

Description

Sitka is a stunning city located on Baranof Island on the western coast of Alaska and directly on the shores of the Gulf of Alaska.  This beautiful city is surrounded by spruce trees and outlying islands, and is home to a thriving community of self-reliant, independent people.  Originally the home of Tlingit Indians, it was visited by the Russians and Americans and grew as a diverse location.  It was featured in the 2009 movie The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.

Transportation

Sitka cannot be reached by road.  It is simply too remote to make that possible.  It has an excellent air service with Alaska Airlines that operates a daily service from various destinations.  It is also served by an excellent ferry service that transports vehicles and pedestrians to and from the city.  Once on Sitka there are shuttles, transit buses and taxis for transportation.

Accommodation

Sitka has plenty of accommodation on offer, from superb hotels to excellent motels. There is an array of holiday accommodation including some independent and private lodges on the outskirts of the city which are great for a rural getaway or a fishing break.  Despite the lack of roads, there are RV campsites for visitors travelling by ferry.

Restaurants

Dining in Sitka is an eclectic experience, and whether you’re looking for a top class fine dining experience, or a freshly ground coffee in a comfortable café, you’ll find what you’re looking for here.  Salmon and other fresh seafood is always on the menu, as is plenty of other local and fresh produce.

Activities, Cruises and Charters

Fishing is a popular pastime in Sitka, where Sockeye Salmon and King Salmon are plentiful and charters are easy to arrange.  Cruises can be booked for a chance to get out on the water, and for land based activities, hunting for game, bike tours, golf and off road trips are just some of the great things to do here.
